Autumn 1 of the primary school term is nearing its end, and the dark nights are returning, along with the wet and cold weather. As we head further into the school term, options for playing outside become limited and PE lessons are now starting to be brought indoors.

This is when Davies Sports begins receiving an increasing number of enquiries for children’s gymnastics equipment as schools re-evaluate their provisions. Primary school gymnastics can be as basic as forward roles, leaps and jumping on mats, helping KS1 children to develop their gross motor skills, strength and coordination. It may seem basic, but gymnastics mats are probably the most important piece of equipment in the school sports hall.

Choosing the right gymnastics equipment for kids

Our specialist team of buyers’ source quality PE and sports equipment from around the world, and when they can’t find it, they develop it! The Shoshin Agility Mats and Shoshin Deluxe Chipfoam Mats are exclusive to Davies Sports and have been made to withstand constant school use. With a range of sizes, catering for early years and KS1/KS2 primary aged children, these gymnastics mats are hardwearing but also very comfortable thanks to their internal materials. As we become ever so aware of our environmental impacts, sourcing recycled materials that also maintain the integrity of the product is important. Both of our Shoshin mats are made with softer, recycled chipfoam to help protect children when rolling and tumbling. Under each mat is an anti-slip latex base. If you’re looking for a way to store and wheel multiple mats out, take a look at our mat trollies here.

The benefits of gymnastics for school children

  • Improves strength and coordination – developing gross motor skills with dynamic movements, balance and control and posture

  • Improves flexibility – as young bodies begin to grow, it’s important that the muscles develop strongly and flexibly to prevent sprains and injuries

  • Helps with communication and awareness – group gymnastics classes help children understand how to move their bodies and also how other move theirs. This promotes communication as children begin to understand each other and develop their awareness skills

  • Keeps children healthy and active – all forms of movement are great for children as they are exploring how their bodies work. Understanding what movement they like and what they can do help to promote healthy lifestyles for the future.
