New Age Kurling Lesson Ideas…

The Paralympics never fails to light up the world with the sheer amount of strength, determination and inspiration on show. And this year was no exception.

With more records beaten and new limits smashed, it is a great time to introduce inclusive sports into your PE lessons to get the whole class active.

New Age Kurling can be played by both able-bodied and disabled people of all ages. It is similar to the original curling game, but adapted so that it can be played indoors in places such as a school sports hall. It is a game that requires concentration, strategy and skill and is great for developing key skills such as balance, coordination and accuracy.

Here are some great games and activities ideal for your PE lessons…

Bullseye

An exciting target challenge with teams playing a tactical game of position with the stones. The stone closest to the centre of the target after all rolls wins!

What equipment will you need?

New Age Kurling competition kit.

The Game:

• Teams of up to four players (red team and blue team). Teams of 2 are the most common.
• Red team roll red stones, Blue team roll blue stones.
• Rolling stones towards the target which must be at least 5 metres away.
• Players can knock stones off the target.
• The coloured stone closest to the centre of the target after all of the rolls, wins.

Precision Points:

A tactical challenge that requires hand-eye coordination, skill and accuracy with teams accumulating points depending on where they land on the target.

The team with the most points at the end wins! If scores are level, there is a sudden death where each team is allowed one more roll.

What equipment will you need?

• New Age Kurling numbered target
• New Age Kurling counters target
• New Age Kurling pushers head and handle (optional)
• New Age Kurling stones kit
• New Age Kurling scorecards (optional)

The Game:

• After all throws have taken place, points are added up and a winner is decided as the team with the most points.

As well as creating fun and competitive games, New Age Kurling is a great way to make cross curriculum links and introduce PE into other lessons…

Maths

When all throws have been taken, children have to add their scores to find a winner. To make this harder, children have to add their score and then find the average.

Other games could include adding, multiplying, subtracting and dividing the numbers they have landed on to reach a final number given by the teacher.

English

The numbers on the target each have questions that link back to them. When children land on that number, the teacher asks the question. If answered correctly, the points are given for the number landed on. Points are added at the end of all throws.

This can be done for all lessons. Get creative and create educational and engaging cross curriculum games.
