Walk to School Month FREE activity

Encourage your class to walk to school with this downloadable resource

It’s no secret that much attention has been drawn to the climate and environmental crisis facing all of us. Through media reporting, better education and youth activists such as Greta Thunberg, children have a better understanding of their impact on the wider world, more so than ever before.

International Walk to School Month is an initiative run by charity Living Streets every October. The aim is to get school children thinking and acting with the best environmental intentions by walking, cycling or scooting to school.

According to the charity, 70% of children used to regularly walk to school a generation ago. This figure has now dropped to around half that amount in recent years. By walking to school children benefit from increased physical exercise, in line with the government's recommended 60 minutes per day. The additional benefits are decreased school traffic and emissions, which positively impact on the surrounding community.

If you haven’t joined the Walk to School Month initiative try this starter activity and assess the success in your school. Download this FREE activity sheet that encourages children to observe different things on their route to school. Using a simple pedometer can help children count their steps and monitor their physical efforts.

There are other ways to count and learn. We have resources to support teachers and children. Try some of these.
